The dancefloor before the genre
EBM, acid house, new beat and industrial music travelled on cassettes through Goa’s full-moon parties. It was not yet called Goa trance.

Proto-Goa · 1988–91
EBM, acid house, new beat and industrial music travelled on cassettes through Goa’s full-moon parties. It was not yet called Goa trance.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Classic Goa · 1992–95
Acid lines, long arpeggios and narrative arrangements turned a party culture into a recognisable, exportable sound.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Boom begins · 1997
The first Boom brought the international community to Herdade do Zambujal in Águas de Moura, Setúbal. Boom itself describes it as the festival’s seed.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Goa → Psy · 1998–02
Tighter kicks, drier bass and sharper effects mark the shift into psytrance. In 2002, Boom moves to Idanha-a-Nova.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Full-on · 2003–06
The kick–bass formula gains definition, breaks get bigger and the sound becomes more immediate. Crystal Matrix and a new Portuguese wave gather force.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Progressive · 2007–10
Slightly slower tempos and roomier arrangements open a parallel dancefloor. Portuguese festivals and labels connect it to the global circuit.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Forest / Dark · 2011–16
Organic textures, denser rhythms and less predictable psychedelia return the sound to the forest and the deep night.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →Modern hybrid · 2017–26
Neo-Goa, psytech, hi-tech, full-on and progressive coexist. Digital tools open production up; preserving first-generation memory becomes urgent.
OPEN THE DOSSIER →GOA → GLOBAL / 1968–2026
Eight eras and twelve scenes connect Goa to the UK, Germany, Israel, Japan, Australia, Aotearoa, Brazil, South Africa and Portugal. Short entries open deeper dossiers, with sources kept discreetly in view.

INDEX / LABELS
PsyDB’s Portugal index carried 21 labels and 122 releases when we read it on 3 September 2026. It counts imprints rather than companies — Flow Records, Flow Vinyl and Hyperflow Records are one organisation — so the number of label organisations is 19. Its coverage also stops around 2009, which leaves later labels such as 604 Freaks Records outside it.

DROP 001 / OBJECTS FROM THE RECORD / SIGNAL FIRST
A small, numbered edition of physical objects made from the archive, by hand, between Portugal and Aotearoa. The Signal hears first: one email, one transmission when it is ready, your number on the list.
You do not need to give an email to use any of this: the archive is open, the machine plays without signing up, and the 24-pattern MIDI pack is public domain. Open the machine →
